Disabled Veterans by the Numbers (2024 Snapshot)

ree

How Many, Who They Are, and Why It Matters

Every year, more veterans return home carrying injuries—both visible and invisible. Behind every statistic is a person who served, sacrificed, and now deserves lasting support. Here’s what the latest data tells us about disabled veterans in America.

🇺🇸 The Big Picture

• There are 15.8 million veterans in the United States.

• About 1.7 million of them are women.

• Almost 30 % of all veterans report a service-connected disability (meaning their injury or illness came from military service).

That’s nearly 1 in 3 veterans living with a lasting condition caused by their time in uniform.

💪 Who’s Most Affected

• Among Post-9/11 veterans, the rate of service-connected disability has climbed from 18 % in 2008 to 31 % in 2022.

• More than 2 million veterans have a disability rating of 70 % or higher, meaning serious or multiple conditions.

• The most common issues are tinnitus (ringing in the ears), knee and back injuries, PTSD, and hearing loss.

💼 Employment Snapshot

• Roughly 5.5 million veterans with service-connected disabilities were working in 2024.

• About one-third of them worked in government jobs—federal, state, or local.

• Veterans with disabilities still face higher unemployment and lower income levels than those without disabilities.

💰 Disability Pay & Support

• A veteran with a 30 % disability rating receives about $524 a month (no dependents).

• Ratings of 70 % to 100 % provide the highest compensation and full access to healthcare, housing, and caregiver programs.

• Despite these supports, about 225,000 disabled veterans live below the poverty line.

❤️ Why These Numbers Matter

These numbers aren’t just statistics—they tell a story about people who gave their best and still want to contribute.

• Many medically discharged veterans lose careers they loved overnight.

• They face uncertainty, lost income, and the challenge of rebuilding identity outside the military.

• When we help veterans regain purpose—through education, employment, or community leadership—we strengthen the nation as a whole.
